TRAILER HUB KITS FAQs

Yes! You can certainly over tighten your trailer's hub assembly. Doing so can lead to several problems and safety concerns. For instance:

  1. Bearing Damage
  2. Heat Buildup
  3. Wheel Alignment Issues
  4. Difficulty in Removing Wheels
  5. Safety Concerns

Appropriate service methods and proper repair procedures are essential for a safe and reliable operation.

When the hub must be removed from the axle for inspection or maintenance, the following removal procedure should be used:

  1. Verify that you have the correct replacement hub - match the hub to your trailer's specifications.
  2. Lift and support the trailer frame.
  3. Remove the wheel from the hub.
  4. Remove the grease cap carefully - pry around the flange of the cap as you turn the hub
  5. Remove the cotter pin from the spindle.
  6. Unscrew the spindle nut and remove the spindle washer.
  7. Pull the hub towards you, until the unit comes off the spindle. Be careful not to let the outer bearing cone fall out of the hub - the seal will retain the inner bearing cone.
  8. Set the hub on a clean surface to keep any contamination from entering the bearing cavity.

Clean the spindle and bearings, as well as inspect them for any damage. Replace the spindle or bearings, if it is necessary. Then, make certain that the right units have been accurately lubricated. Once all of the necessary inspections and repairs have been performed, reinstall the hubs.

  1. Place new lubricated hub on the spindle.
  2. Reinstall all of the components.
  3. Tighten the spindle nut 30 to 40 ft. - lbs. when turning the hub to ensure that the bearings are seated accordingly. Do not move the hub after this step has been completed.
  4. Loosen the spindle nut completely, until the nut can be naturally turned with your fingers.
  5. Tighten the spindle nut by hand, without moving the hub.
  6. Install the cotter pin - if it cannot be assembled, back the spindle nut up to the next available slot, then insert the cotter pin.
  7. Bend the legs of the cotter pin over the top of the spindle, so that the spindle nut will not back off. The spindle nut should freely move with your fingers, being held in place by the cotter pin. Whereas, the hub should not have any noticeable movement when pulled back and forth.
  • Lack of lubrication
  • Overloading the vehicle
  • Installing the axle nut too tight
  • Installing the axle nut too loose
  • Contamination of the grease (due to missing or defective grease caps & seals)
